Wire Portraiture + Contour Drawing

February 15th Suunday 11:00 - 1:30

more about this class

Come join us for a creative afternoon exploring the art of contour drawing and wire sculpture with artist Duncan Sherwood-Forbes! The workshop will begin with instruction and exercises in blind contour drawing, learning how to let the eye guide the hand and navigate the subject in a single line. You will have the option of drawing your peers or objects, and after a series of blind contours we will refine your favorites into contour drawings with thought and intention, which will serve as inspiration for your wire sculpture! At the end of the workshop, you will leave with multiple contour drawings as well as at least one wire sculpture, and a whole host of new skills! Whether you have no experience and are looking for a fun event to do with friends, or you are a seasoned artist seeking new skills, this workshop offers a welcoming and supportive environment to nurture your creativity. This workshop is appropriate for artists of all levels who are interested in contour drawing or wire sculpture. ALL MATERIALS ARE INCLUDED Drawing boards, paper, pencils, wire, and pliers will all be provided, but feel free to bring your own materials. BIO: Duncan Sherwood-Forbes (b. 1989) is a multimedia artist and designer specializing in wire and figurative metalwork. Born and raised in Lincoln, Massachusetts, Sherwood-Forbes began honing his skills at the age of 14 during after school programs in figure drawing and cartooning at the nearby DeCordova Museum of Art. He was introduced to the wire work of Alexander Calder at the Putney School for the Arts in Vermont in 2006, where he also learned to weld – skills that he would further while an undergraduate majoring in sculpture at the Sam Fox School of Art and Design (Washington University in St. Louis). Sherwood-Forbes has continued to refine his work, building a unique practice in his unusual media. Today he works as a sculptor full time, showing work at art fairs and galleries around the world. Sherwood-Forbes is known for “drawing through air,” utilizing wire to investigate the boundary between sculpture and drawing and carve negative space into figures and portraits. He has led workshops up and down the California coast in single day up through weeklong formats.
