Abstract Watercolor with Sharon Virtue

February 7th Saturday 10:00 - 4:00

more about this class

The Vibrant Abstract Watercolors is a day long workshops to explore an expressive style of painting with watercolor balancing both realistic and abstract elements. The focus is on a loose, playful, and intuitive style rather than precise illustration. We will learn the artist’s tips and tricks, and ways to stay creatively motivated. The goal is to be curious and open minded to the possibilities of this medium and to create beautiful inspired compositions that have your unique style at their heart. Focus will be on capturing the gesture and atmosphere of what we are seeing. We will review color theory, how to mix paints, and wet on wet and wet on dry techniques, to understand the nature of the materials and how they impact the final results. The goal is to enjoy the process of painting with watercolor, which has unique, surprising and ethereal qualities. Starting with mixing colors we will create charts to see possibilities. Then we will work thru a series of exercises and techniques to discover the qualities of this medium, creating several small artworks to review and decide what we want to focus on to build our compositions in layers of color and form. I recommend 140lb watercolor paper. (Cold press is rough/textured good for ‘granulation’ process hot press is smooth- good for lines and fine details) This workshop is open to all levels and those who want to learn new techniques in expressive painting. All materials will be provided BIO: Working as a multimedia artist and art facilitator for over 30 years, Sharon Virtue’s practice includes painting, ceramics, printing, mosaic and surface pattern design.
