Painting After a Meal - Soup Season
January 11th Sunday 11:00 - 2:00
more about this class
This is a one-of-a-kind workshop with artist Laurie Caird, who will share both her watercolor techniques and a homemade soup lunch. Laurie’s work often focuses on the remains of a meal—painting finished plates as a way to honor the experience that just happened. Gathering to share a meal connects us to our communities in a ritual that invites us to pause—to appreciate the effort, care, and camaraderie present in every element. In this workshop, we’ll lean into that moment. After sharing Laurie’s homemade soup, we’ll turn our attention to our own empty bowls and plates, using her watercolor techniques to capture the shapes, stains, reflections, and textures left behind. We’ll explore granulating pigments, subtle color shifts, and simple approaches to painting glass and ceramic surfaces. You may not walk away with a finished product but you will leave with techniques, and new knowledge about materials. Bring an open mind and enjoy a cozy afternoon of eating, painting, and creative community. Dietary preferences will be accommodated. Please include anything we should know in the booking form message box. Supplies include everything you need for the workshop including granulated watercolor samples, and assorted watercolor papers. If you have your own materials that you would like to work with you are welcome to bring those as well. Materials kit is available for 25.00, which will include everything you need for the workshop and granulated watercolor samples, assorted watercolor papers to take with you. Materials fee is 25.00, payable to the instructor by cash or Venmo. BIO: Laurie Caird is an Oakland-based artist. Her work explores our relationship to time, celebrating the Japanese concept of ichigo ichie – cherishing the moment at hand, as it will never be replicated – and themes of connection to nature, community, and joy through food. She is currently working on a series called Digest: Lingering After a Meal, reflecting on how gathering to share a meal connects us to our communities in a ritual that offers the opportunity to pause, particularly after a very satisfying meal and uplifting camaraderie, and appreciating the effort and care demonstrated in every element on the table.
