more about this class
This series of workshops combines art history with hands-on exploration in mixed media and collage. Each session introduces the work of a woman artist who incorporated collage into her practice, offering inspiration as you develop your own artistic voice. In this workshop, we’ll focus on Sonia Delaunay, whose vibrant, abstract compositions were influenced by the traditional quilts she encountered in her Russian childhood. A prolific and innovative artist, Delaunay expanded her creativity beyond painting and collage into fashion, interior design, graphic arts, book illustration, and decorative arts. Each class begins with an introduction to the life and work of a featured woman artist—some historical, some contemporary. While the emphasis is on cultivating your own collage style, understanding the techniques and approaches of these artists helps build your visual vocabulary of shape, color, and composition. I’ve been teaching this combination of art history and studio practice for the past five years and love seeing how students respond to these artists’ work, making it their own. By studying how these women shaped their artistic paths, you’ll begin to assemble your own creative lineage—an “artist family tree” that connects your work to a rich history of innovation and expression.
