Shibori Dyeing with Lisa Solomon

April 19th Saturday 12:00 - 4:00

more about this class

Shibori is a centuries-old Japanese resist dyeing technique that creates intricate patterns on fabric. The earliest known example of shibori-dyed cloth in Japan dates back to the 8th century and was part of the treasures donated by Emperor Shōmu to the Tōdai-ji temple in Nara. Traditionally, indigo—a natural dye celebrated for its deep blue hues—has been used across many cultures for its versatility and practical benefits, including antibacterial and insect-repellent properties. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of folding and binding techniques to create your own indigo-dyed pieces. We’ll prepare a simple indigo vat and explore a range of resist methods, such as kanoko, nui, kumo, itajime, and arashi (don’t worry—you’ll learn what each one means!). Your supply fee will cover a few items to dye, but you’re encouraged to bring additional natural fiber materials—think cotton, silk, linen, or wool. Whether it’s t-shirts, kitchen towels, or tote bags, make sure they’re washed and free of any sizing for the best results. Come explore the magic of indigo and express your creativity through this ancient craft! BIO: Lisa Solomon is an Oakland, California based mixed media artist, author, educator, and occasional curator. She received her BA in Art Practice from UC Berkeley in 1995 and her MFA from Mills College in 2003. Her work is shown internationally and is in numerous public and private collections.
