COLLAGE MEETS PAPERCUT: POLITICAL AND PERSONAL PHOTOMONTAGE The art of political collage. Using the most accessible materials we will explore political graphics and journal keeping– combining those art forms to make collages that include cut paper text & designs. We will discuss how paper cut connects to the punk legacy of quick and fast graffiti stencils, as well as the traditions of papel picado and Chinese papercut that are common in the Bay Area. This class is open to all artists and ages– we will be discussing and working in a style of “kitchen table craft” making artwork together and sharing inspiration. We will experiment, share ideas, and leave with artwork that speaks to both personal reflection and collective storytelling. BIO: Kate Laster is an artist, educator and critical historian from Alaska now based in Oakland. She received a BA at Evergreen State College in 2015 and in 2019 received a MA+MFA in History & Theory of Contemporary Art and Studio Art with an emphasis in Printmaking at SFAI. They have been an artist-in-residence at Kala Art Institute, In Cahoots & Open Windows Cooperative as well as Vermont Studio Center, Cisco Home of the Brave in Utah, and Pillow Fort Art Center in New York. Laster makes generative projects connected to the weight of the past, human migration and the effervescent exhaustion of everyday love. Laster teaches at San Francisco Center for the Book, has been a studio assistant at Hospitality House’s Community Arts Program and currently works at NIAD as a studio facilitator.

When scheduling classes, please note that workshops will be automatically canceled if enrollment is four participants or fewer. If this occurs, your credit will be applied to the next available workshop of the same name. If no future session is scheduled, a full refund will be issued. Also, you can cancel your class up to 7 days prior to the scheduled date. In the event of a cancellation, you will receive a credit toward your next booking. Please be aware that we do not offer refunds.
