Hand Embroidery with Holly Grigalunas
May 4th 12:00 - 3:00 Sunday
more about this class
The class will begin with a brief overview of embroidery—its cultural significance, history, and how it has evolved from being considered "women’s work" to a recognized art form and a tool for resistance and protest. Holly draws on her own practice, which is a playfully sarcastic nod to the human condition. She will share insights into how this medium can be both expressive and impactful using words an images. Students will then move into the hands-on portion of the lesson. Each participant will receive a kit containing a 3-inch hoop, fabric squares, embroidery floss, and a needle. The session will start with an introduction to basic embroidery stitches before moving on to a designed piece. Pre-made patterns will be available, or students can create their own with guidance. From there, everyone will have time to stitch, with support and encouragement provided throughout. BIO: Holly Grigalunas is a self-taught hand embroiderer based in San Francisco. She loves everything midwestern and/or unserious.
