more about this class
Encaustic Painting Workshop: Exploring Wax and Mixed Media In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the rich and versatile art of encaustic painting. Guided by instructor Lisa Ostapinski, who comes with over 20 years of experience in the medium, you'll learn essential techniques while creating your own mixed-media encaustic artwork on a wood panel. Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, is a form of painting that involves a heated wax medium to which colored pigments have been added. Encaustic painting, meaning "to burn in," is an ancient art technique involving applying molten, pigmented wax to a surface, dating back to ancient Greece. The workshop will cover the fundamentals of encaustic painting, and combine encaustic with collage, carving, drawing, and oil painting. Open exploration is encouraged, and each participant will leave with an original encaustic piece that incorporates these techniques. Participants should have basic painting experience with oils and/or acrylics. This class is ideal for those new to encaustic painting but is not suited for those with advanced experience in the medium. Please wear closed-toe shoes, and wear short sleeves or sleeves that can be rolled up. If you are sensitive to solvent fumes, please bring a mask — we will provide ventilation. Participants are also encouraged to bring collage materials, including textiles, to personalize their artwork. Lisa will provide a variety of collage materials to explore as well. Please note: The higher cost of this class reflects the unique technical skill required for teaching as well as the specialized materials provided, which are included in the total cost—there’s no additional materials fee. BIO: Lisa Ostapinski is a painter and art educator based in Oakland, CA. She works with unusual materials and processes including metal leaf gilding, encaustic painting (beeswax), sgraffito and oil paint marbling. Her work juxtaposes archaic media with modern forms producing a fresh, contemporary take on these art historical techniques. She chooses lustrous, visually rich materials such as gold leaf and beeswax for their natural beauty as well as their historical use in European religious painting to evoke the divine. Lisa’s work is an exploration of the potential for abstract forms and luminous materials to communicate ideas about the spiritual realm.
