March 16th Sunday 12:00 - 5:00

more about this class

an intermediate bookbinding class The caterpillar or centipede structure — documented in Keith Smith’s Exposed Spine Sewings Volume 3 — is a beautifully decorative yet incredibly strong binding. It is visually complex but quite simple to learn the basics, and once learned, can lead to endless variations in the pattern for beautiful journals that lay completely flat when opened. In this workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of the caterpillar stitch and acquire the skills to develop their own caterpillar variations for cover patterns in the future. Sewing and some bookbinding experience is helpful for this class. Suggested but not required: Take the beginner class, Cut, Fold, Cover, Sew first. This class will focus on the sewing of the structure to complete a blank journal. Students are encouraged to bring: If you own a small Dremel or jewelry drill, please bring it to class. Also, if you have any specific paper you want to use for your covers, bring it along. A materials fee of $10 will cover the supplies used during the class. (To pay the materials fee bring cash, or Venmo the instructor during the class.) BIO: e bond is an artist, bookbinder, writer, and designer currently living in Richmond, CA.
