block printing with Lisa Solomon

November 23rd 1- 4 Saturday

more about this class

Block Printing is one of the simplest methods to create imagery in multiples. In this class you’ll learn how to carve your own blocks out of an eraser and speedy carve. The class will also briefly touch on three different methods. Jigsaw technique Carve a design into a lino block, then cut it into separate pieces for each color. Ink each piece separately, then reassemble the pieces like a jigsaw before printing. Multi-block printing Carve a different block for each color in the print. You can also ink different parts of the same block in different colors. For example, you could ink the top half of a block blue and the bottom half red. Reduction linocut Carve a design into a lino block, then print the first color on each sheet of paper. Carve away more of the block and print the second color, and so on until the final color is printed. Once the print is complete, the block can't be used to make another edition. Supply fee of $35 will be paid directly to the teacher, and includes: an eraser, a block, a lino cutting tool and black stamp pad to test print with and take home. Paper and block printing ink and acrylic paint will also be supplied. Students can bring other materials they might want to try printing on [fabric, sketchbook, tote bags, etc]. The should also come with some sketches/ideas of things they’d like to turn into a block. BIO: Lisa Solomon is an Oakland, California based mixed media artist, author, educator, and occasional curator. She received her BA in Art Practice from UC Berkeley in 1995 and her MFA from Mills College in 2003. Her work is shown internationally and is in numerous public and private collections. Profoundly interested in the idea of hybridization [sparked from her Hapa heritage – she is ½ Japanese and ½ Caucasian], Solomon’s mixed media works revolve thematically around discovering her heritage, the notion of domesticity, craft, feminism, and the pursuit of art as science/research. She is frankly obsessed with color/color theory and is drawn to found objects, tending to alter them conceptually so that their meanings and original uses or intents are re-purposed. She has been teaching at Bay Area Colleges and classes around the world for 20+ years. Ms. Solomon’s work was featured in a monograph entitled Hand/Made published by MIEL press in 2013. In August 2019 her book A Field Guide to Color - a watercolor workbook all about color and color theory was published by Roost Books.
